Do you want to be taken seriously on Pinterest? Then it is time for you to step up your Pinterest game with Rich Pins!
Pinterest is one of the top social media platforms for bloggers. There is no denying it! If you want to be a successful blogger, then you need to take your Pinterest account seriously. And this starts with making your pins look more appealing and professional!
You might have noticed that some pins have titles and descriptions attached to the image, while some only have the description and image. Pins with “titles” attached to them are called Rich Pins. So if you want to add titles to your pins on Pinterest, then you need to learn what Rich Pins are, why they are important, and how to get your website approved for Rich Pins.
Let’s take our first stab at the Pinterest world with a deeper look at Rich Pins.
WHAT ARE RICH PINS?
Who better than Pinterest to describe Rich Pins! Take a look at the description provided on the Pinterest for Businesses help page.
“Rich Pins are Pins that include extra information right on the Pin itself.”
There are many different types of Rich Pins. And different style bloggers need different Rich Pins from their site. But for the sake of this blog post, I am going to focus on article Rich Pins because all bloggers, no matter the field, will share articles on Pinterest.
WHY ARE RICH PINS IMPORTANT?
Rich Pins make your Pinterest account, and pins, look legit. It may sound silly, but I’m serious!
With Rich Pins, the pins shared from your website hold greater visual appeal. You will never see a top name brand that doesn’t use Rich Pins. So why wouldn’t you want to step up your game to compete with the big dogs?!
Let’s compare a normal pin to a Rich Pin:

With normal pins, the pin can still be appealing with a well-crafted image. But with Rich Pins, there is more visual appeal with the bold title attached.
Also, with Rich Pins, your account name or website name is always attached to the pin even when other users “re-pin” it. So when you click on a Rich Article Pin, there will be a section before the description saying “Article from (Your Site)”. This will also have the image from your Pinterest account.
So if you want to add titles to your pins from your website (as the headline of this blog post says), then you need to get Rich Pins!
HOW TO SET UP RICH PINS
Setting up Rich Pins is not a difficult task. But Pinterest does warn you that if you do not know how to manage metadata, it is best to leave this set up for a website developer.
But since you are a boss ass babe, I know that you can set up Rich Pins by yourself! And with this blog post, I will show you how to set up Rich Pins (by yourself), with a self-hosted WordPress site (WordPress.org).
Now, it’s time that you go grab yourself a drink as we will be getting down and dirty with your website and Pinterest account. Read on to learn the 4 steps you need to complete to get Rich Pins to appear on Pinterest from your website.
1. Set up a Pinterest business account
First, you need to have a Pinterest business account. Most bloggers transform their personal Pinterest account into their blogging account without changing it to a business page. But this transition from personal to business is a must!
There are many perks to a Pinterest business account. Like having your website link in your bio and having access to Pinterest analytics. But it is also important if you want to set up Rich Pins!
To convert your account from Personal to Business click here and enter the appropriate information.
Or if you don’t have a Pinterest account yet, and want to register for a business account from the beginning, click here!
Once your account is a business account, it is time to move on to the next step of verifying your domain.
2. Verify your domain on Pinterest
Once logged into Pinterest, in the top right-hand corner, you should see a circle with your account image. Once you click on this, a drop-down menu will appear with 6 options. Click on ‘Settings’
Or if you are already on your profile page, there is a gear symbol that will appear at the top of the account page. Once you click on that gear, the settings menu will appear.
In your account settings, there is a section called Profile. It should look something like this:
Obviously, your account should have all these areas filled in. Including your website URL! Once you enter your website URL into the Website area, click on the ‘Confirm Website’ option.
This popup will appear with a piece of code that needs to be added to the head of your website.
You will receive an individualized code! I removed the content part of my code for security purposes 🙂
If you do not know how to add code to the head of your site, you can easily do it with a WordPress Plugin! I like to use Tracking Code Manager. All you need to do is download and install this plugin. Once installed, add a new tracking code and name it “Pinterest Website Verification”. Then copy and paste the unique code Pinterest just gave you where it tells you to “Paste your Tracking Code here”.
With this plugin, you need to make sure that you place the code before the <Head> and that it shows on all devices and all pages, posts, and archives of the site.
Your settings should look something like this:
Once you have all the right settings in place, go ahead and click Save!
Or if you don’t know how to add a code to the head of your site, and don’t feel comfortable working with the Tracking Code Manager plugin, it might be best to contact your website developer for this step in the Pinterest Rich Pin process!
After you enter the code into the head of your website, go back to the Pinterest page you were just on that gave you the code for your website. And click Finish! Pinterest will then go and confirm your site. A check mark will appear beside the website URL to tell you that the site is confirmed!
3. Set up metadata
To set up Rich Pins, you need metadata on your site. Metadata is the behind-the-scenes information you put on your website to provide Google with more information. This is done through Open Graph, Schema.org or if you have a self-hosted WordPress site, through the Yoast SEO Plugin.
The Yoast SEO plugin is critical for all WordPress.org sites! It will help your site with SEO in more ways than 1. And to set up Rich Pins, you need to set up your metadata, which can be done through Yoast!
If you don’t have Yoast, or if you haven’t set up your metadata (SEO title and Meta description), go check out my post 3 Things You Can Do TODAY To Improve Your Blog’s SEO. This post covers everything you need to know about installing the plugin and creating the appropriate metadata on blog posts.
But, if you already have Yoast and have set up an SEO title and Meta description for each blog post, then you are ready to apply for Rich Pins!
4. Apply for Rich Pins
Applying for Rich Pins is the easiest part of this process. (Thank goodness, huh?)
All you need to do now is copy the URL of one of your most recent blog posts. This will be the post you submit to Pinterest for verification! So make sure that post has the appropriate metadata as Pinterest will base the rest of your site off of this 1 post.
Once you are ready, go to the Pinterest Rich Pin Validator! Enter, or paste, your blog post URL into the given field and click Validate!
Note: You only need to validate 1 of your blog posts for your whole website to be approved for Rich Pins. So don’t worry about entering every blog post into the validator!
Once you submit the link, your website should be approved for Rich Pins within an hour.
If your website gets denied, it is most likely because the metadata is not set up. If you have WordPress.org, make sure you set up your metadata for each blog post through the Yoast SEO plugin!
